Take Time to Protect Your Health & Get Your Flu Shot

The Stokes Family Health Center is now offering flu shots.  Flu shots are available to anyone who would like to receive one, but high-risk patients such as: kids 6 months-19 years, pregnant women, people 50 years and older, people with chronic medical conditions, those who live in nursing homes or long-term care facilities, people caring for children under 5 years of age and health care workers should highly consider getting the flu shot.

You should not receive the flu shot if: you have an allergy to chicken eggs, have had a severe reaction to the flu vaccine, children younger than 6 months old, if you have previously gotten a flu shot and was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome within 6 weeks of getting the vaccine and people with moderate-severe illness with fever should wait until symptoms lessen.

The flu is a very serious illness and can be prevented if preventive actions are taken.  Each year 5-20% of the population gets the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from complications with the flu.  Also, about 36,000 people die from the flu every year.

The Health Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30-5:00.  An appointment isn’t necessary to receive a flu shot.  The cost is $30 if you don’t have insurance. Medicaid, Medicare and some private insurances will cover the cost.  Make sure you bring in your insurance cards at the time of your visit.
