REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY FOR MARRIAGE LICENSE
The following are a list of requirements to apply for a marriage license in Stokes County:
21 years or older – drivers license and social security card for identification.
18 – 20 years old – certified copy of the party’s birth certificate and social security card for identification.
16 years old and under 18 years of age – certified copy of party’s birth certificate, social security card, and written consent to the marriage from a parent having full or joint legal custody of the underage party; by a person, agency, or institution having legal custody or serving as guardian of the underage party. The written consent either acknowledged by a notary public or signed in the presence of the Register of Deeds.
If under the age of 16 years of age, contact the Register of Deeds Office for information.
If any party has been previously married and the last marriage ended in divorce, annulment or death, the following is required:
Filed Divorce Judgment signed by the Judge from the county which the divorce was granted.
Filed Annulment papers, signed by the Judge from the county which the annulment was granted.
Certified death certificate.
The charge is $70. This covers $60 for the marriage license, and $10 for a certified copy of the marriage license, once our office receives the marriage license back into the office, we certify a copy and send to the couple. We accept cash, check, money order, and credit/debit card.
The marriage license is good for 60 days from the issue date.
Once the couple receives their marriage license they may get married in any county in the state of North Carolina.
NOTE: The marriage license once the couple is married, should be returned to the county in which the license was issued.
If one or both of the parties does not speak English, the couple must provide an interpreter.
If one party cannot be present for the application due to hospital admittance, incarceration, active military, etc., an Affidavit in Lieu of Personal Appearance form must be completed. Please see the link below to download the form:
